If you want to experience the joys of Christian living, I highly encourage you to read this book. Tozer’s goal of this book was to aid God’s hungry children so to find Him (via preface of book). Here are some of the things I love about this book:1. “The impulse to pursue God originates with God, but the outworking of that impulse is our following hard after Him.” Tozer explains the paradox of the importance of pursuing God. Even though as Christians we are going to heaven and we experience God’s unchanging love, there are still privileges of continuing to dive into God. God is looking for people He can lavish His blessings on, and those people are the ones who are diving into their relationship with Him.
2. “Self is the opaque veil that hides the face of God from us.” Jesus’ death on the cross removed the veil that was hinder us from coming to God. There is nothing on God’s end keeping us from experiencing the presence of God. And yet, most of us do not experience God personally or experientially in life. We keep ourselves from God.
3. “To most people God is an inference, not a reality. He is a deduction from evidence which they consider adequate, but He remains personally unknown to the individual.” If God is real, then He must be relevant to our lives.
4. “It is the nature of God to speak, to communicate his thoughts to others.” God is not silent. God did not forget how to talk when the Bible was finished. He sees that plans He has for your life and wants to lead you into them.
5. “Jesus taught that His power lay in His continual look at God” (John 5:19-21). This is still a kind of radical thought for me, but Jesus did nothing on earth out of His Godhead. Everything He did is something we can do through the power of the Holy Spirit. The key is to continually gaze at Jesus.
6. “One of the greatest hindrances to internal peace which the Christian encounters is the common habit of dividing our lives into two areas – the sacred and the secular.” Whatever we do we should do it all for the Lord.
would highly recommend the Pursuit of God to anyone wanting to go deeper with God. I am sure if you read it you will get something different than what I laid out above, but I believe whatever you get would greatly help your relationship with Jesus.

The Pursuit of God Introduction by Samuel Zwemer AW Tozer Samuel M Zwemer 9781626309876 Books Reviews
I read this on my , and my 14 pages of highlights and notes are testament to the fact that I found it highly interesting and helpful in my understanding of how to have a personal relationship with a living God. The bottom line idea that Tozer wishes to portray is that we must use the analogy of any personal relationship we wish to cultivate. "We have almost forgotten that God is a Person and, as such, can be cultivated as any person can." If we want to have a better relationship with a person, we don't go out and read about it (the irony of this statement in a book review does not escape me)...or go to lectures about it...we spend time with that person and try to find out what makes them tick. The entire book is exploring the challenges of doing this with a higher power we can't see.
He does not shirk the challenges of this or the inevitability of doubts, fears, and digressions. This, to me, made the book more authentic. "Whoever will listen will hear the speaking of Heaven...Believing, then, is directing the heart's attention to Jesus."
The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because its language--probably by virtue of its having been written in the 1940s--was a bit stilted at times. There were also a few times when I thought he crossed the line into preaching instead of sharing, and also making assumptions about his readers and what they already accept or believe that might not be true.
One of the things I most enjoyed was the prayer at the end of each chapter. In spite of language, these felt very contemporary to me, and resonated with thoughts and feelings that I struggle with in my own prayer life and spiritual journey.
If you have a , download a sample and see if it seems appealing to you. If you're looking at a hard copy in a bookstore, the Introduction and Preface will give you a good feel for it.
I really enjoyed this book. As a lifelong Christian in the midst of a church home search, this book truly spoke to me. It reminded me that our personal relationship with God trumps all else. In addition, I found many valid points about worship being basically a meaningless habit for so many, spending one hour a week at church yet never having that necessary daily connection with God.
My soul feels more at peace, somehow. I feel my priorities have been realigned & that worship is so much more personal than going to church.
Although this book was written in 1948, I found it relevant for today's society.
The main reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 was that it took me a long time to read it & I felt some parts were a little dry, but overall I was engaged & highlighted most of the prayers to personally use as well as many important points throughout the work.
I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a nudge in their personal relationship with God and/or struggling with finding a church home.
This may be the most convicting book I've ever read. I do not include the Bible in the books I've read. It is the inspired Word of God and therefore in a class of it's own. A. W. Tozer impresses me as a theologian for the masses. His insights are deep but his style is straightforward and easy to understand. I will not attempt to do a point by point review. I'll just say that if we, professing Christians, will honestly consider the points he makes we will come to a better understanding of what prevents us from having the intimate relationship with our Creator that He clearly desires. The point Tozer makes about the veil that separates us from God is enough in itself to explain our problem. I intend to read it again taking notes and writing down his many statements that make for excellent quotes. The prayers he includes at the end of each chapter are worth writing down and including in ones regular prayer time.
